SIDING PLANNING GUIDE

Hardie Siding Repair: What to Assess First

A damaged board can be a simple repair or a sign that the surrounding wall needs attention. Start with the cause and the condition around it.

Document the visible damage

Note whether the board is cracked, loose, swollen, or separated at a joint. Photograph the area and nearby windows, doors, trim, and roof transitions. If the issue appeared after a storm or returns after earlier work, include that history in your request.

Look beyond the face of the board

Water staining, soft trim, gaps, and damage at adjacent boards may call for a closer look at flashing, weather barrier, or sheathing. A sound quote should explain what is visible, what remains concealed, and how discoveries during removal will be handled.

Discuss the finish

A replacement board may differ from aged siding in texture or color. Ask whether the proposal covers one board, a larger section, or painting an elevation to achieve a consistent appearance.

Questions to consider

Can one board be replaced?

Often it can, depending on access, fastening, surrounding condition, and availability of a matching profile.

Should a cracked board simply be caulked?

That depends on the cause and extent. A qualified contractor should assess whether the board, joint, or underlying detail needs repair.
